Wasted : Masterclass
The few week of the term I spent in gathering mode. To work with waste as a material I learned that a chunk of my time needs to be focused on sourcing and collecting, and building relationships. I was able to partner with an amazing local businesses such as Set Swap Library who attempt to catalogue and recycle the huge and random waste from set design, I also joined a short course with journalist Katie Treggiden. It was really helpful to engage with other designers commited to using waste and learn from established designers new ways of being bold, finding waste and making it beautiful again
Katie ended up interviewing me about journey of working with waste and my experience on her short course aimed at designers working with waste. It was a really useful and fun exercise, which I was really lucky to be part of, because although I felt quite cringe, it helped me talk through my practice and really map out my own journey of working with waste and how that has been a key influence for me as a designer both in my old role and in my new direction. If you can spare 17 minutes and quite alot of waffle the recording is here. I found out moments later I had Covid and then was quite unwell for a few weeks so that is my excuse.
